RELUCTANT PARTICIPANT

The saying, “you can take a horse to the water, but you can't make it drink”, is seemingly applicable to the Association of Mineworkers Union (AMCU), which, at the time of going to press, had still not signed the much-celebrated framework agreement on sustainable mining, that all other main stakeholders publicly endorsed on July 3. At the time, AMCU was urged to come back to the main table as soon at it had consulted with its members, to declare public approval for what is largely a peace and stability document that paves the way for a better industry. Perhaps at some stage AMCU will get a thirst, but one gets the impression that drinking from this water may not be an urgent item on its agenda.
