The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (Sahpra) board chairperson Professor Helen Rees expressed concern about the new Covid-19 variant, C.1.2, assuring South Africans that the variant is being monitored.

C.1.2 has been detected in eight provinces in the country and has also been detected in eight other countries. The variant was discovered in May and it represents 2% of current Covid-19 testing.

C.1.2 evolved from C.1, a lineage of the virus that dominated infections in the first wave of the virus in South Africa in mid-2020.

“Mutations of the virus are a concern. We have seen that this might be more transmissible or could be better in evading our immune systems in resisting our immune response. We are watching it closely,” said Rees.

Meanwhile, Sahpra said it is monitoring vaccines worldwide and, in South Africa, working closely with the National Institute of Communicable Diseases, the Medical Research Council and academics.

Rees highlighted that vaccines that are 100% effective are quite rare, adding that similarly, the Covid-19 vaccines are not 100% effective.

“As such, the different vaccines that we are looking at will have various levels of efficacy,” she explained
