Liquid petroleum (LP) gas suppliers will soon be back in business after an interruption in supply left them and their customers without stock.

Technical problems led to unit failures at both the Chevron and PetroSA refineries on Thursday and Friday respectively.

South African Petroleum Industry Association executive director Fani Tshifularo told News24 the refineries were up and running on Wednesday.

The association represents the interests of the two companies, among others.

“It may take a few days for businesses to be fully stocked but the process is in motion,” he said.

A distributor, who asked not to be named, told News24 that the shortage has had a knock-on effect as he was unable to run his business and his customers, comprising mostly restaurants and other eateries, were also incapable of operating without gas.

“I have been driving from Somerset West to Paarl in search of supplies but got absolutely nothing,” he said.

'Shortage costing money'

The businessman’s supply has still not been restored and says the shortage is costing money.

Mauro Colzi of Multigas in Parow Industria said the supply interruption led to a tough week for the business.

“We have a responsibility to our clients and if we don’t deliver, we can be sued by those whom we supply,” he said.

While the business’ supply has since been restored, Colzi added that Multigas is under pressure to deal with their backlog of orders.

Tshifularo confirmed the cause of the unit failures is still under investigation.
