Redefine to revamp Cape Town building into a green building
JSE-listed Redefine Properties’ The Towers, previously known as the Standard Bank Centre, in the Cape Town central business district, will see a major transformation as part of the Green Star South Africa Existing Building Performance pilot programme.
Speaking at the Green Building Council of South Africa’s (GBCSA’s) seventh annual convention in Cape Town this week, Redefine regional development manager Xander Rau explained that a commitment to being a responsible developer meant upholding the principles of the GBCSA.
“A truly green building should incorporate not only environmental design, but should also aim to make the least impact on the environment by maintaining peak renewable energy and resource efficiency,” he said.
The ‘green-over’ of The Towers would include a new flushed glazed system on its external façades that would reduce the cooling demand by about 30%, while the common areas of the building had also been fitted with energy efficient lighting using timer controls to switch the lights off automatically when not in use.
Redefine was also currently considering the possible installation of photovoltaic solar panels on the roof of the building to save energy.
“By keeping in tune with environmental innovations and trends, Redefine is able to offer tenants the latest cutting-edge technology in our new and existing buildings. In this way, our properties rely less on the grid and our tenants benefit financially too,” Rau said.
In addition to the transformation of several buildings in Cape Town, Redefine was also undertaking new developments and upgrades in Johannesburg.
