JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – During 2013, the Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT) had, for the first time, received and exported more than 70-million tons of coal, the company stated in its December operating statistics.

During the year, 70.81-million tons of coal had been received and 70.23-million tons exported, compared with the 68.52-million tons received and the 68.34-million tons shipped during 2012.

China was the terminal’s biggest export destination during 2013, with 75% of the export volume shipped to China, while Europe was the second largest export destination, at 20.8%.

Commenting on the increased export volumes, the RBCT explained that 2013 marked the first phase of its supply chain improvement plan, during which it focused on stabilising and improving internal RBCT efficiencies, adding that this had yielded positive results.

“[During 2013] there has been a significant improvement in the coal supply chain. The communication and coordination with Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) has improved with joint planning and coordination of all operational issues. Overall, we are engaging more with the stakeholders, specifically TFR, coal exporting parties (CEPs) and the Transnet National Ports Authority, which allows us to improve the planning and performance of the value chain,” the RBCT told Mining Weekly Online.

The company further added that the second phase of its supply-chain improvement plan would involve realising the full benefits of TFR’s Shongololo initiative, through which 200-wagon trains were moved from selected mines, bypassing the Ermelo yard leg, to reduce train-handling time.

“The planning and coordination between TFR, RBCT and the CEPs is crucial for the success of this initiative,” RBCT said.
