Ramaphosa to address nation as violence, looting persist
President Cyril Ramaphosa will address the nation, on Monday, on government’s response to the unrest in parts of the country.
This after protests against the imprisonment of former President Jacob Zuma turned violent over the weekend, with looting and violence making headlines in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.
The exact time of the President’s address will be announced shortly.
The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) said it has commenced with pre-deployment processes and procedures in line with a request for assistance received from the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure.
The request entails SANDF support for police operations in parts of KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.
The President called for calm, warning those involved in any criminal behaviour that they will face the full might of law.
South Africans are urged to report criminals by sharing videos of criminal activity with the police.
Ramaphosa is also urging people to consider what they post on social media. He warned that the sharing of fake news or content that incites violence and looting is a crime, as is the possession, receiving and use of stolen goods, and the interference of police while they carry out their duties.
