Name of the Project
Raigarh–Pugalur ultrahigh-voltage direct current (UHVDC) transmission link project.

Location
The project will connect Raigarh, in central India, to Pugalur, in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, in India.

Client
Power Grid Corporation of India (PowerGrid).

Project Description
The 1 830 km Raigarh–Pugalur link will be one of the longest in the world. The megaproject will have a 6 000 MW capacity – the equivalent of more than six large power plants – to meet the electricity needs of more than 80-million people.

The two-way link will integrate thermal and wind energy to transmit power to high-consumption centres located thousands of kilometres away, supporting energy needs in the south, when wind strength is low, and transmitting clean energy to the north, when there is excess wind power.

The project will also feature technologies selected to minimise the footprint of the transmission stations.

Jobs to be Created

Value
The project is valued at $840-million.
