Production at Galaxy Resources increases in June
JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Production at lithium miner Galaxy Resources’ Jiangsu lithium-carbonate plant, in China, increased to 604 t in June, up from 521 t in May, the company said on Thursday.
Sales of battery- and technical-grade lithium carbonate totalled 548 t in June, marginally ahead of May's figures.
Battery-grade lithium carbonate production and sales also recorded increases during the month. Galaxy noted that testing and qualification of the product was continuing with a range of battery cathode manufactures in China, which was expected to boost Galaxy's customer base in the second half of the year.
"Production at Jiangsu has been steadily increasing following the recommencement of operations at the plant in February 2013. We continue to ramp-up operations at the plant, which at current production rates, already ranks as the second-largest lithium-carbonate production facility in China," Galaxy interim MD Anthony Tse said.
When the Jiangsu plant reaches design capacity of 17 000 t/y of battery-grade (99.5% purity) lithium carbonate, it will become the largest producer in the Asia Pacific region and the fourth largest in the world.
Meanwhile, Galaxy was also advancing plans to develop its Sal de Vida lithium and potash brine project, in Argentina, which was currently the source of 60% of global lithium production.
Galaxy indicated that it was bullish about the global lithium demand outlook and was positioning itself to become a major producer of lithium products.
Lithium compounds are used in the manufacture of ceramics, glass, electronics and are an essential cathode material for long-life lithium-ion batteries used to power e-bikes and hybrid and electric vehicles.
