The Portfolio Committee on Trade and Industry on Wednesday called on the public to comment on the Special Economic Zones (SEZ) Bill before public hearings start next month.

Interested parties would have until May 3 to make written submissions to the committee, after which parties would be invited to make oral submissions during public hearings on the Bill on May 15 and 17.

The Bill provides for the designation, promotion, development, operation and management of SEZs. It further provides for the establishment, appointment of members and functioning of the SEZ advisory board.

Further, the Bill envisaged empowering the Trade and Industry Minister to establish an SEZ Fund to regulate the application, issuing, suspension, withdrawal and transfer of SEZ operator permits; to provide for functions of the SEZ operator; and to provide for transitional arrangements, as well as matters connected with these functions.
