Name and Location
Port of Grangemouth combined heat and power (CHP) plant, Scotland.

Client
Forth Energy, a joint venture between Forth Ports and SSE.

Project Description
The wood-fuelled CHP plant will be the largest in Scotland.

It will use sustainably sourced wood fuel, primarily from overseas and will have the capacity to generate 120 MW of low-carbon renewable electricity and 200 MW of heat.

Electricity will be supplied to the national grid and heat will be supplied to industrial users, thereby reducing their carbon emissions.

The plant could also potentially lead to the subsequent installation of a district heating network in the Grangemouth area.

Value
The plant represents a capital investment of £465-million.

Duration
The plant could begin generating heat and electricity by 2017.

Latest Developments
Forth Energy has received consent from the Scottish government to develop the CHP plant at the Port of Grangemouth.

The company will now engage with the relevant authorities, including the Scottish government and the Falkirk Council, to examine the details of the consent granted to progress the development the plant.

It is expected that the plant will take about three years to build, following a year’s detailed design and engineering.
