Name of the Project
Port of East London’s N-berth deepening and strengthening project.

Location
On the West Quay of the Port of East London, in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province.

Project Owner/s
Transnet National Port Authority (TNPA).

Project Description
N-berth comprises the R-berth and R-extension. It has a gravity-quay wall that was built in the early nineteenth-century. R-berth and R-extension were refurbished in 2005, resulting in a combined berth length of 250 m and a depth of -10.5 m (chart datum).

The project will increase the berth capacity of the automotive terminal at the port and allow for new-generation vessels to berth in the port.

The project will address the inconsistency in berth depth and length to ensure that the three berths along the West Quay are -10.5 m CD in depth, with a total length of 550 m. This will enable the port to berth two car carriers along the West Quay simultaneously.
