Company Announcement - Molex Incorporated recently launched its Polymicro Technologies™ Optical Fibre Bundle Assemblies. The bundle assemblies are custom configured for scientific and industrial optical requirements, including biotechnology and pharmaceutical diagnostic equipment, semiconductor fabrication and inspection and laser welding and marking.

“Quality and accuracy are critical to measuring samples in spectroscopy, and not easily achieved with standard assemblies,” said Teodor Tichindelean, global product manager, Molex Polymicro Technologies products. “Our high power optical fibre bundle assemblies are manufactured from raw material to final product – in one location for consistent quality and precision performance.”

Molex combines design support, fibre production and assembly of high fibre count, high packing fraction bundles in the same location for significant cost savings. The manufacturing process maximises the number of fibres in a bundle, while minimising wasted space. Designed for use in high temperature applications requiring high power density, lamps and lasers, the fused bundling eliminates epoxy, fluorescence and interstitial spaces common in multi-fibre bundles.

Polymicro Technologies optical fibre assemblies are available with almost any amount of fibres, including both illumination and detection fibres, in one assembly for optimal design flexibility and adaptability. The high precision fibre arrays deliver superior throughput and input-output shape conversion. The ruggedised bundling will withstand a wide variety of operating conditions.

Incorporating fused silica and precision components, Polymicro Technologies bundled assemblies can include optical, electrical and mechanical functions, in addition to features such as micro-machined end tips, metal terminations or precision couplings. Optical fibres may be bundled at one end and fanned out in various configurations at the other. Custom end shapes can be micro-machined directly onto the optical fibre, saving bonding and coupling losses. Termination style and technique, jacketing and fibre type may be specified.

“Customer design requirements vary in complexity. Single-source Polymicro Technologies optical fibre bundle assemblies can be tailored to a specific application and requirements for unparalleled design flexibility and cost savings,” adds Tichindelean.
