Name of the Project
Polcevera river bridge.

Location
Genoa, Italy.

Project Owner/s
Autostrade.

Project Description
The bridge over the Polcevera connects the Port of Genoa and the wider coastal area to France. The bridge collapsed in August 2017.

The new bridge will play an important role in Genoa’s returning to being an important shipping and commercial hub. It will have a continuous 1 067-m-long steel deck with 20 spans. It will have 19 elliptical piers made of reinforced concrete, the majority of which are positioned 50 m from each other.

Two of the piers will be 100 m from each other because of their location on the river and the railway.

The design takes into account that the bridge crosses a densely populated area.

Potential Job Creation
None stated.

Capital Expenditure
Not stated.

Planned Start/End Date
The project is expected to take 12 months to complete, which will start after the demolition of the old bridge.

Latest Developments
Workers have completed the posing of a second section of the deck over the future bridge over the Polcevera river, a joint effort by Salini Impregilo and Fincantieri.

At the site, workers are working in shifts day and night to finish the erection of the 18 piers of reinforced concrete that will support the bridge. Six piers have been completed. Workers are work on the remaining piers along the dry riverbed.

Two enormous cranes have raised the beams of the second section of the deck between Piers 4 and 5 about 40 m in the air to have them connected with those of the first section placed on October 1. Like most of the bridge’s other 19 spans, this section of the deck is 50 m long. Three others will stretch 100 m each fromthe centre of the structure. Spans at either end will run for 40.9 m and 26.2 m.

Once completed, the bridge will be equipped with the most advanced technology to make it a sustainable piece of infrastructure. It will have solar panels to make it energy self-sufficient and a central system that will provide constant monitoring of the soundness of the structure, as well as robots for inspections and maintenance.

Key Contracts and Suppliers
Pergenova, a joint venture between Salini Impregilo and Fincantieri Infrastructure (construction contract).

On Budget and on Time?
