The City of Cape Town and a consortium comprising Japanese firms CFP Corporation, Kaneyima Co and the Japanese International Cooperation Agency.
Project Description
The pilot project, the first for a South African municipality, will be located at the Kraaifontein Integrated Waste Management Facility and will be able to convert 500 kg of plastic into about 500 ℓ/d of heating oil.
Some of the oil will be used to power a generator, while the balance will be available for sale as heating oil to be used in industrial processes.
Value
The pilot project will be made possible through a R10-million Japanese government grant to foster technology export from Japan.
Duration
The pilot project will run for six months, after which it will be assessed and decisions will be made on the sustainability and affordability of this pyrolysis technology.
