Name of the Project
Pinetown packaging material factory expansion project.

Location
Pinetown, KwaZulu-Natal, in South Africa.

Project Owner/s
Tetra Pak.

Project Description
The project involves the upgrade and capacity increase of Tetra Pak’s packaging material factory. The upgrade will allow for an increase in local content to 80% production capacity, enabling Tetra Pak to extend its reach to serve more customers in the Southern Africa region.

The new packaging technology will produce less carbon dioxide emissions, as it requires less energy and water for processing, and use alternative, green sources of electricity.

It will also allow for the production of the latest packaging formats using state-of-the-art technology.

Potential Job Creation
The expansion will create many direct and indirect job opportunities through suppliers in the region.

Capital Expenditure
R500-million.

Planned Start/End Date
The factory took about two years to be completed and was officially reopened in April 2024.

Latest Developments
Tetra Pak has reopened its newly renovated factory.

The upgraded factory opens new export opportunities for Tetra Pak products, particularly under the framework of the African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement, Tetra Pak Southern Africa MD Klaus Plenge has said.

Speaking at an event to mark the reopening of the facility on April 4, President Cyril Ramaphosa said the expanded facility would support job creation while driving innovation, promoting localisation and advancing the circular economy.
