Project Description
The transmission line will link Italy and France, traversing the Alps.

The project comprises an estimated 320 kV extruded high-voltage direct current (HVDC) underground cable turnkey system.

This includes the engineering, production and installation of two 600 MW bipolar circuits along a 190 km land route between the substations of Piossasco, near Turin, in Italy, and Grand’Ile, in Savoy, France, totalling about 95 km in each country.

Latest Developments
Italy’s Prysmian Group will lead a consortium comprising seven companies to build the HVDC underground connection between Italy and France.

The total cost of the project cost is estimated at €500-million. The cable producer will be responsible for coordinating the design, supply, installation, including the civil works, and commissioning of the interconnection.

Alstom has been awarded a contract worth more than €300-million by TERNA Rete Italia to build two 600 MW, 320 kV HVDC converter stations for the transmission link between France and Italy.

Alternating current will be converted from each country’s electrical network into direct current for transmission and vice versa.

The contract also includes maintenance for the converter station in France.
