PERTH (miningweekly.com) – US-based Peabody Energy has confirmed that it would reduce contractor numbers at its Queensland and New South Wales coal mines by some 450.

A spokesperson for the miner told Mining Weekly Online that the reductions were a response to current market conditions and formed part of ongoing actions to reduce costs.

“Peabody Energy Australia regrets the impact on the contractors directly affected and is conscious of the likely impacts on communities in which it operates. The company is taking all necessary steps to secure the long-term competitiveness of its operations,” the spokesperson said.

Peabody’s Australian operations delivered some 33-million tonnes of coal to steel producers in Asia, Europe and South America. The company was hoping to increase this production to some 36-million tonnes during 2013.

Peabody owns three mining operations in New South Wales, and eight mines in Queensland.
