PERTH (miningweekly.com) - Miner PanAust on Thursday reported that production for 2012 had remained in line with guidance, with the company producing some 63 285 t of copper, 135 965 oz of gold and 616 687 oz of silver.

During the three months to December, the Phu Kham operation, in Laos, delivered 18 671 t of copper, with a record production of 7 050 t reported for December.

During the quarter, the operation also produced 15 934 oz of gold.

The miner said on Thursday that the benefits of the recently completed and commissioned Phu Kham upgrade were reflected in the quarterly records for total material mined, the amount of ore milled, the mill throughput rate and copper recovery.

At the Ban Houayxai gold/silver operation, also in Laos, PanAust produced 32 882 oz of gold and some 92 673 oz of silver during the three months to December.

PanAust noted that quarterly performance records were also achieved for the Ban Houayxai project for the amount of material mined, ore milled and gold and silver dore poured.

For the full year, PanAust was currently expecting to produce between 62 000 t and 65 000 t of copper in concentrate, as well as a precious metal production in concentrate of between 160 000 oz and 175 000 oz of gold, and between 1.1-million and 1.2-million ounces of silver.

The company noted that the mining schedule at Phu Kham had been adjusted to prioritise the mining of material above the interim west wall of the openpit operation, where a zone of geotechnical instability had developed during the December quarter.

The instability did not present a risk to the ultimate openpit design of Phu Kham, PanAust said, but access on an area of relatively high-grade copper ore, which had originally been scheduled to be mined throughout 2013, had now been deferred to the following year.
