Project Description
Envisaged is a new university consisting of five pan-African institutes, focusing on science, technology and innovation.

PAU will establish an academic network of existing postgraduate and research institutions, intended to serve all African countries and consisting of five thematic institutes in:
• East Africa, which will include programmes in basic sciences, technology and innovation;
• West Africa, which will include programmes in earth and life sciences, including health and agriculture;
• Central Africa, which will include programmes in governance, the humanities and social sciences;
• North Africa, which will include programmes in water and energy sciences, including climate change; and
• Southern Africa, which will include programmes in space sciences.

The project will also assist in establishing the governance structure of PAU at central and country levels, as well as academic and research capacity.
The first three PAU thematic institutes will comprise:
• the PAU Institute for Basic Sciences, Technology and Innovation, in Kenya;
• the PAU Institute for Life and Earth Sciences, in Nigeria; and
• the PAU Institute for Governance, Humanities and Social Sciences, in Cameroon.

Algeria will potentially host the fourth institute under the water and energy science programme, including climate change, on behalf of North Africa, while the host country to represent Southern Africa and the space and sciences programme is yet to be selected.

The project is estimated at $154.24-million.

Duration
Five years.

Latest Developments
The African Development Bank (AfDB) will invest $45-million, in the form of a grant, to initiate the development of the project.
