Origin halts Qld drilling on asbestos scare
PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Energy group Origin Energy has suspended drilling operations across 12 rig sites in Queensland after asbestos was found on site.
The operator of the Australia Pacific liquefied natural gas (APLNG) project said that it had been notified by one of its drilling fluid suppliers that an imported product had been found to contain asbestos.
Origin took immediate precautionary action to safeguard its employees, contractors and land-holders by suspending drilling operations.
All stocks of the affected material has been quarantined and accounted for, and specialist waste removal personnel were in the process of removing the material from each location.
The drilling fluid supplier had also instigated a withdrawal of the product from the market and was conducting tests into the source and introduction into the supply chain, advising Origin that it had notified the relevant authorities.
Origin had also instigated an independent investigation into the incident.
Origin was currently developing the $24.7-billion APLNG project. First LNG cargo from the nine-million-tonne-a-year project was expected by mid-2015, with the second train expected to be completed during the fourth quarter of 2015.
