Oil-pipeline project, Kenya and Uganda
Kenya-Uganda oil-pipeline project
Name of the project and location
Kenya-Uganda oil-pipeline project.
Project description
The governments of Kenya and Uganda plan to extend the existing Mombasa – Eldoret oil pipeline to Kampala.
The project comprises construction of a pipeline as an extension to the existing pipeline to take white products into Uganda to serve markets in Uganda and beyond.
A feasibility study, funded by the European Investment Bank (EIB) was undertaken by an international consultant M/S Penspen who submitted a report in May 1999. A complementary study was undertaken in 2001 to update the earlier study. The two studies found the project technically feasible and also financially and economically viable. The project entails installation of an 8-inch diameter, 320-km-long pipeline from Eldoret to Kampala with an annual capacity of about 1,2-million cubic metres.
Value
$110-million.
Duration
The pipeline should be in operation by late 2007.
