US President Barack Obama announced on Friday that he intends to nominate Patrick Gaspard as America’s new ambassador to South Africa.

Obama made the announcement on the second day of his weeklong, three-country African visit and ahead of his arrival in South Africa on Friday.

Gaspard will occupy the position left vacant in January when Ambassador Donald Gips’ term expired. Gips served from June 2009.

As with Gips, Gaspard is not a career diplomat.

He has been executive director of the Democratic National Committee since 2011, having previously served as an assistant to Obama and director of the White House Office of Political Affairs from 2009 to 2011. He was also the national political director for ‘Obama for America’.

Born in 1967 in the Democratic Republic of Congo to Haitian parents, Gaspard’s family relocated to the US when he was three and he grew up in Park Slope, Brooklyn.

He held a number of positions with the City of New York early on in his career and worked for Jesse Jackson’s presidential campaign in 1988.

The nomination requires Senate confirmation.
