The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) on Tuesday accepted an offer made by tyre manufacturer Continental Tyre South Africa (CTSA) relating to weekend payment rates, ending the union’s strike at CTSA’s manufacturing facility, in Port Elizabeth, Numsa Eastern Cape regional secretary Phumzile Nodongwe told Engineering News Online.

CTSA currently had two shift systems, namely a weekend shift and a week shift. Week shift employees were paid straight time during the week and should they work over the weekend were paid time-and-a-half for Saturday and double time for Sunday, which was in line with the bargaining council agreement.

On the other hand, weekend shift employees were paid at straight time for work done on a Saturday and time-and-a-half for Sunday work.

Numsa had been striking at the facility since April 15 demanding that weekend shift workers be paid time-and-a-half for Saturday and double time for Sunday.

Nodongwe explained that the offer accepted by Numsa comprised the “amalgamation” of the two shift systems so that “no one only works weekends”.

A shift would now run from Monday to Sunday with workers being paid time-and-a-half for work done on a Saturday and double time for work done Sundays.

He said Numsa’s members would return to work on May 1 allowing the company some time to make the necessary arrangements needed to implement the change in system.

CTSA could not immediately be reached for comment on the agreement reached.
