PERTH (miningweekly.com) – The Nullagine joint venture (JV) exceeded sales expectations during the three months to March, operator BC Iron reported on Monday.

The company noted that despite the severe weather conditions during the quarter, the Western Australia-based iron-ore operation sold 1.22-million tonnes, which exceeded the wet season guidance of 1.13-million tonnes.

MD Morgan Ball pointed out that the January rainfall in the JV region was the fourth heaviest in more than 100 years, owing to Cyclone Christine. However, rainfall during the remainder of the quarter was below average, allowing the JV to catch-up from the periods of downtime.

The wet weather affected load and haul activities during the quarter under review, which Ball said had a flow-on effect on the short-term mine schedule and resulted in increased mining of waste compared with budget.

As a result, only about 950 000 t of ore was mined during the quarter, which was below guidance. However, the target for total material mined was achieved, and waste-to-ore ratios improved as the quarter progressed.

Material from existing stockpiles provided supplemental crusher feed, and total ore crushed for the period reached more than one-million tonnes.

Despite the weather interruptions, BC has maintained the Nullagine JV's full-year sales expectations of between 5.8-million tonnes and 6.2-million tonnes of iron-ore.
