Nullagine output down in December quarter
PERTH (miningweekly.com) - Iron-ore miner BC Iron on Thursday reported a slight decline in its mining and crushing rates for the quarter ended December, with shipments down some 15% on the previous quarter.
During the three months to December, the Nullagine project produced just over one-million tons of ore, with the crushing circuit treating some 994 044 t. This was down from the 1.1-million tons of ore mined over the September quarter, and the more than one-million tons of ore that was crushed.
The miner told shareholders that, following the upgrade and commissioning of the crushing circuit during the first half of the 2013 financial year, the circuit did not perform as expected during the quarter under review.
Furthermore, an independent review of the crusher configuration was conducted, and found that the addition of a scalping circuit to the main crushing plant would improve plant efficiency and throughput.
The scalping circuit was installed into the main crushing plant during the quarter, and was fully commissioned in the first half of January.
BC Iron noted that following the installation of the scalping circuit, the operation had seen material improvements in its crushing performance.
The miner said that a combination of the ongoing low-grade zone at Outcamp pit 1 and the crusher performance issues resulted in lower-than-expected production and exports during the quarter.
BC Iron hauled just over one-million tons during the quarter, shipping a similar volume. This was compared to a haulage of 1.2-million tons in the September quarter, and the shipment of 1.23-million tons during the same period.
However, the miner noted that the low-grade zone has now been mined out, and the crusher performance had been addressed. As such, BC Iron remained confident that the Nullagine project would reach its five-million-ton-a-year guidance, with BC Iron’s share of the production being some 3.2-million tons.
