University of South Africa institutional development VP Dr Molapo Qhobela has been appointed CEO of the National Research Foundation (NRF) for a five-year term.

Former CEO Dr Albert van Jaarsveld left the NRF in February to take up an appointment as vice-chancellor of the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

“Dr Qhobela brings with him a wealth of experience gained in leading development of a significant number of policies and strategies, at the departments of Education and Science and Technology, which have shaped the nature and operations of the South African university and education system.

“He has exceptional knowledge of the South African higher education system and the National Innovation agenda, which will serve him well in his new position,” said Science and Technology Minister Naledi Pandor.

NRF chairperson Professor Loyiso Nongxa added that the appointment came at an opportune time for the NRF, having just adopted a new strategy, Vision 2020.
