Northern Star mulls bigger plans for Jundee

PERTH (miningweekly.com) – The Jundee gold project, in Western Australia, could require more power, ASX-listed Enerji said on Tuesday, as gold miner Northern Star was considering increasing output at the mine.

Enerji was, in May, mandated by Northern Star to conduct an evaluation and analysis into the construction of a hybrid solar thermal power station at the Jundee mine.

After an initial period of assessment, Enerji determined that its technology was applicable to the Jundee project and that the project satisfied the company’s investment criteria. Since then, the companies have been working closely to complete a project valuation.

However, Enerji said on Tuesday that following an August reserve upgrade at Jundee, the operation’s energy requirements might increase, as Northern Star had evaluated an increased production portfolio at the mine.

Enerji said its mandated analysis and evaluation would continue once Northern Star’s expanded scope assessment had been concluded, adding that, if the gold miner did progress to commit to host, supply waste heat to and procure power from Enerji at Jundee, it was possible that the miner would do so at a larger scale than initially anticipated.

“Northern Star is excited about the potential growth at Jundee and, as such, we have implemented a more comprehensive analysis of our power requirements going forward,” said Northern Star CEO Stuart Tonkin.

“Enerji has proved to be a valuable source of information given their experience in the sector and their unique technology is of interest to us,” he added.

If Enerji’s valuations and analysis were received positively and Northern Star decided to proceed, Enerji would, on the execution of legally binding documentation and the satisfaction of various conditions, provide its low-cost electricity at Jundee with a potential to further roll out its technology across other mining projects.
