PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Rare earths developer Northern Minerals has increased the mineral resource at its Browns Range project, in Western Australia, by about 165%.

ASX-listed Northern Minerals reported on Tuesday that the project now had a global mineral resource estimate of 4.13-million tonnes, at 0.68% rare-earth oxides, for 28 084 t of total rare-earth oxide.

This was up from the previous estimate of 17 584 t of rare-earth oxide.

At the Wolverine deposit, the total mineral resource had now been estimated at 2.14-million tonnes, grading 0.86%, for 18 404 t of rare-earth oxide. This was a 75% increase on the previous resource estimation for Wolverine.

Northern Minerals said that the new resource estimate followed a 24 000 m drilling programme completed between April and July, which also established a maiden resource for the Gambit West, Gambit and Area 5 deposits.

“This upgrade to our resource is another key milestone for Browns Range, and we are continuing to deliver on these milestones, developing and expanding the project as we move towards production,” said MD George Bauk.

He added that the company had now built a significant resource for a start-up mining operation, and would look to grow this resource further.

“Our strategy is to continue to grow the mineral inventory in the Browns Range region and the results from our latest drilling programme show the potential to add resource tonnage at these deposits,” Bauk said.

At Wolverine, the mineralisation also remained open, and recent drilling had already returned some of the best results to date from drill holes outside the current resource model, he added.

“We are now working towards collating data from the current drill programme to include a further resource upgrade in early 2014,” Bauk said.
