JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Platinum group metals producer Northam has reduced the energy intensity at its Zondereinde mine smelter to 8 MW, from 12 MW, to accommodate testing into the possible erosion of the smelter’s refractory bricks.

The company indicated that ultrasonic testing and chemical testing of the refractory bricks that made up the walls of the smelter were under way to determine any potential erosion.

The tests had also necessitated a reduction in the volume of concentrate being treated by the smelter.

Therefore, Northam has suspended the receipt of concentrate produced by Platmin.

Captive concentrate produced in excess of the reduced capacity of the smelter would, if necessary, be treated at third-party smelters on a toll basis, the company stated.
