JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – The National Union of Mineworkers on Tuesday announced that it had resolved to continue with its strike, which was currently in its third week, at JSE-listed Northam Platinum’s Zondereinde mine, following a mass meeting with its members.

The meeting was held to brief members about a meeting held under the auspices of the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration on Friday to attempt to resolve the disagreement between the platinum miner and NUM regarding the company’s two-year wage offer, NUM chief negotiator at Northam Platinum Ecliff Tantsi said.

He added that no agreement had been reached with the Northam management.

"It was resolved in the mass meeting today that the strike must continue. Workers further resolved that we must march to Northam head office, in Johannesburg, on Tuesday next week.

“Workers have also resolved to stick with their demands currently on the table. Northam management must be replaced as it is at sea, so far as negotiations are concerned," he said.

Northam said in a statement on Monday that its offer, which was made on November 5, remained unchanged. The miner was offering a 9% increase for core and an 8% increase for noncore employees, as well as an 8% increase in its living-out allowance.

The NUM was still demanding a R2 000 increase in basic wages for noncore employees, which was equivalent to a 22% to 42% increase, and an increase of R2 100 in basic wages for core employees, which was equivalent to an increase of between 23% and 43%.

Further, the union was also demanding that the living-out allowance be increased by 69% from R2 200 to R3 718 monthly, staggered in two tranches over six months.

The NUM also did not want a multiyear agreement.

“The NUM is still open for further negotiations with the company and we will be on standby for 24 hours,” the union said.
