Latest Developments
In June this year, OPG received detailed construction plans, schedules and cost estimates for two potential nuclear reactors at Darlington.

The submissions by Westinghouse Electric Canada and SNC-Lavalin Nuclear/Candu Energy were commissioned last year and will help inform the government’s decision on whether to move forward with new nuclear at the Darlington site.

The two reactor designs considered were – the Enhanced Candu 6 reactor, designed by Candu Energy, a unit of SNC-Lavalin, and the AP 1000 reactor, designed by Westinghouse.

The completed submissions will be analysed by a team from OPG and the Ministries of Energy, Finance and Infrastructure. This review will take several months to complete.

In May 2012, the federal government approved the Darlington New Nuclear Project Environmental Assessment. It concluded that the project would not result in any significant adverse environmental effects, given mitigation.

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission has also granted a site preparation licence, but no work has been done at the site.

All decisions on whether to move forward with the two potential nuclear reactors will be made by the government of Ontario.
