Neart na Gaoithe offshore wind farm project, Scotland
Name and Location
Neart na Gaoithe offshore wind farm project, North Sea, Scotland.
Client
Mainstream Renewable Power.
Project Description
Neart na Gaoithe will be the first large-scale offshore wind farm built and operated in Scottish waters to be directly connected to the Scottish electricity system.
The project has the potential to generate 450 MW of renewable energy, which is enough to power 325 000 Scottish homes. The wind farm will consist of up to 75 wind turbines and will occupy about 80 km2. At its closest point to land, it will lie more than 15 km off the Fife coast in water depths of 45 m to 55 m.
The subsea cable transmitting the wind farm’s power will come ashore at Thorntonloch Beach, in East Lothian, from where its underground cable will travel along a 12.5 km route to a substation located within the Crystal Rig onshore wind farm, in the Lammermuir Hills. Grid connection will occur in December 2016.
The wind farm will offset more than 400 000 t of carbon dioxide emissions a year.
Value
The project is estimated at £1.5-billion.
Duration
The wind farm is expected to start preconstruction activities in 2015 and generate electricity by 2018.
Latest Developments
Mainstream Renewable Power has received consent from the Scottish government to build and operate its 450 MW Neart na Gaoithe offshore wind farm, in the Outer Forth Estuary, in the North Sea.
