NamPower calls for bids for Anixas II power station’s construction
Namibian power utility Namibia Power Corporation (NamPower) has called for bids for the engineering, procurement and construction of the 50 MW Anixas II power station.
The power station will make use of dual-fuel technologies to be used in an internal combustion reciprocating engine plant.
NamPower’s existing Anixas I power station, in Walvis Bay, produces 22.5 MW, burning diesel.
The Anixas II turnkey project will also be built in Walvis Bay.
The closing date for bid submissions is September 3.
NamPower owns and operates Anixas I and two other power stations, with the combined installed capacity of 459.5 MW, with these stations being the main sources of local power generation capacity in the country.
The Van Eck coal-fired plant produces 90 MW, while the Ruacana hydroelectric plant has a nameplate capacity of 347 MW.
NamPower’s core business is generation, transmission and energy trading, which takes place within the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP), with the utility having sold surplus energy worth N$479-million into the SAPP in 2020.
NamPower supplies bulk electricity to the regional electricity distributors (REDs), mines, the Namibia Water Corporation, farms and local authorities (where REDs are not operational), throughout Namibia.
The utility also added 10 MW of renewable energy in 2020, while its transmission system’s availability was 99.85%.
