Project Description
When completed, the Nacala corridor will be one of the most cost-effective routes to the sea for import and exports from Malawi, Zambia and western Mozambique.
Under the four phases of the project, more than 900 km of road are under construction or rehabilitation in the three countries.
Phase 1, comprising a 348 km road component, in Mozambique, and a 13 km bypass, in Malawi, was approved in 2009.
Phase 2 comprises 360 km of roadworks in Zambia, from Laungwa to Mwami.
Phase 3 consists of 160 km of roadworks in Mozambique and 152 km of roadworks in Malawi, as well as the construction of two one-stop border posts.
Phase 4 of the project will involve the rehabilitation of 75 km road between Liwonde and Mangochi, and the establishment of one-stop border posts at Chiponde and Mchinji at the Malawi–Mozambique and Malawi–Zambia borders respectively.
