MZI counts on slow-down windfall to construct Keysbrook
PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Mineral sands developer MZI Resources on Wednesday said that the slow-down in construction activity in Western Australia’s resources sector could be a boon, as the company worked to bring its Keysbrook project into production.
The ASX-listed company noted that the slow-down in resources construction over the past six months gave MZI an excellent opportunity to achieve more favourable terms for the Keysbrook project.
This included the strong possibility of striking a fixed-price, lump-sum, turnkey contract for the development of the project, which the company said would provide greater certainty regarding development costs and schedules.
The slow-down in the mining services industry could also be advantageous, MZI said, providing the company with an opportunity to seek favourable proposals from selected mining contractors.
The project’s feasibility study was based on an owner-operator model; however, MZI said that the current market conditions provided an opportunity to reduce the forecasted operating costs.
MZI would now conduct a formal tender process for an alternative contract mining strategy.
The Keysbrook project will produce an average 91 000 t/y of mineral sands products.
MZI noted that it was on track to secure credit-approved offers from its two mandated joint lead arranging banks to develop the project, and added that it was continuing to progress a port services agreement with the Bunbury Port Authority, as well as other project-related commercial contracts.
