Multipurpose fast breeder reactor project, Russia
Name of the Project
Multipurpose fast breeder reactor (MBIR) project.
Location
The project is being built at the Research Institute of Atomic Reactors (NIIAR) in Dimitrovgrad, Ulyanovsk region, Russia.
Client
Rosatom.
Project Description
MBIR is a 150 MWt, multipurpose research facility featuring a sodium-cooled fast neutron reactor with a 50-year design life.
It will replace the BOR-60 experimental fast reactor that has been in operation at the NIIAR’s site since 1969.
It will be a multiloop research reactor capable of testing lead, lead-bismuth and gas coolants.
The rector will operate on mixed uranium and plutonium oxide fuel.
Along with the reactor, the MBIR will have the entire infrastructure required for in-pile research.
A comprehensive research reactor unit with high neutron flux can neither be small in size nor be modular in design; high costs are, therefore, unavoidable.
This factor has contributed to the idea that has been promoted by the International Atomic Energy Agency, which advocates for the creation of shared facilities where one reactor can service the needs of many countries.

Latest Developments
AEM Technology, part of Atomenergomash, a subsidiary of Rosatom, has started the construction of the rector pressure vessel (RPV) for the MBIR.
The completed RPV will weigh 83 t, be more than 12 m long and 4 m in diameter.
A total of 14 pieces of equipment and supporting structure, weighing more than 360 t, will be built for the MBIR.
AEM Technology has previously said that construction of the demonstration reactor is expected to be completed by 2020.
