JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – AltX-listed Mine Restoration Investments (MRI) on Friday reported that the initial ramp-up of its 5 000 t/m coal briquetting plant, in Vryheid, KwaZulu-Natal, had been completed, stating that the project could now start full commercial production.

The plant, that produced coal briquettes through processing coal fines – traditionally an unwanted by-product in the coal mining industry – from South African coal miner Keaton Energy's Vaalkrantz colliery’s existing fines stockpiles, as well as the mine’s monthly fines production, started initial coal briquette production in October last year.

MRI also reported that the plant’s resuspension unit had now been fully installed and commissioned, allowing it to operate from the fines stockpile or the plant.

The company added that it was in advanced discussions with potential customers and offtakers, which included Keaton Energy, with a view to securing long-term offtake agreements.

It was also currently market-testing product and expected to finalise arrangements shortly.
