PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Mining giant BHP Billiton has confirmed that it would further cut staff numbers in its iron-ore division.

A spokesperson for the company told Mining Weekly Online that the mining major had engaged external consultants to assist with an organisational review.

It has been said that BHP would cut up to 3 000 jobs from its iron-ore division in Western Australia, which currently employs about 16 000 permanent and contract workers, but this number was not verified by the company.

“This is about continuing to safely improve our business and ensuring we are a competitive, world-class operation. We have been open with our employees about the review, and we hold regular all-employee Town Hall meetings and question and answer sessions with the business leaders, as a matter of course,” the spokesperson said.

Earlier this month, BHP cut some 170 staff from its Mt Whaleback iron-ore operation, as part of the company’s cost and workforce review. Some 100 staff have also been made redundant at the company’s headquarters in Perth.

“In situations where employees are impacted we will undertake every effort to assist them throughout the process and to seek redeployment opportunities where possible,” the spokesperson said on Wednesday.
