Name and Location
Mombasa–Nairobi petroleum products pipeline project, Kenya.

Client
Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC).

Project Description
KPC intends to construct a new suitably designed pipeline from Mombasa to Nairobi to complement and eventually replace its existing 14-inch-diameter petroleum products pipeline that has been in operation for the last 35 years.

The 450 km pipeline will run alongside the existing pipeline. The new pipeline is designed to meet the demand for petroleum products for the East Africa region until 2044.

Value
The project will cost an estimated $400-million to implement.

Duration
Construction is expected to take two years.

Latest Developments
KPC has released an expression of interest (EOI) for the construction of the pipeline.

According to the EOI, the scope of work of the successful contractor will include:
• the construction and commissioning of the cross-country pipeline, including all associated civil, mechanical and corrosion control works;
• the tie-in works of the new pipeline to the existing stations, including associated mechanical, electrical, civil, corrosion control, instrumentation and control and communication system works;
• the installation of fibre-optic cable along the entire pipeline route and associated terminal equipment at the stations;
• the upgrade of fire detection and firefighting facilities in the stations;
• quality assurance tests for the entire works during construction, precommissioning, commissioning and start-up works at completion; and
• maintenance of the system during the defects liability period, including attending to defects.

Interested parties have until February 28 to submit their EOIs.
