MMG increases copper production in H1
PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Hong Kong-listed MMG has reported a 33% increase in copper production for the first half ended June, with the Chinese-owned miner delivering 89 235 t of copper in the six months under review.
“The increase in the first-half copper production is due to productivity improvements at Sepon, the ramp-up of Kinsevere and the commissioning of our copper oxide openpit at Golden Grove,” said CEO Andrew Michelmore.
He noted that the Sepon operation, in Laos, transitioned to an owner-operator model during the half year, which has contributed to the project’s productivity improvements.
The Kinsevere operation, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, also exceeded original designed nameplate capacity during the second quarter ended June, which Michelmore said highlighted the efficiencies identified since nameplate capacity was first achieved in December last year.
“Kinsevere produced 15 858 t of copper cathode during the quarter, representing a 14% increase on the previous quarter and a 56% increase on the second quarter of 2012, due to higher throughput and a stable electricity supply enabled by the use of diesel generators,” said Michelmore.
He noted that, during the first half, MMG also produced some 280 968 t of zinc in concentrate, a 16% decrease compared with the previous corresponding period, as a strong performance from the Rosebery mine was offset by lower production at Century, where lower-grade ore impacted production.
MMG remained on track to achieve its yearly production target of between 170 000 t and 185 000 t of copper and between 572 000 t and 590 000 t of zinc during the full 2013.
