Neal Froneman is using the resources downturn to assemble a suite of diversified assets that could make his Sibanye Gold the new domestic superman as the upturn unfolds. The Sibanye CEO, who has put up his hand to be South Africa’s next mining champion, is wasting no time in bulking up on platinum and even moving into coal to guarantee the independent generation of its own electricity supply for the company’s deep gold mines that should soon both be joined by deep and shallow platinum mines. Sibanye is taking steps to bring Rustenburg Platinum into its fold and unlock synergies with Kroondal next door. A successful consummation of the Aquarius deal will also mean that Sibanye gets a toehold in platinum in Zimbabwe, where the Great Dyke holds out promise of lower-cost ounces extracted by a remarkably conscientious workforce.
