As mining strikes in South Africa continue unabated, with scant regard of the enormous overheads mining companies are grabbling with, it is very likely that mines will be compelled to invest in trackless mining, resulting in massive job losses both in South Africa and abroad.

This is according to Sean Jones, a founder and director of black-owned artisan training company, Artisan Training Institute.

“With platinum workers at Amplats recently demanding a basic pay of R12 500, it is clear that unions are failing to recognise the massive capital investment mines have to incur – as they simultaneously face declining prices. It is a nightmare waiting to happen.” He said that the cost pressures on mines is a global issue as resources prices decline, coupled with soaring input costs.” “It is my belief that we will see mines increasingly mechanise over the next decade, meaning added long-term job losses. This is without normal job losses that would have occurred to higher costs and lower profit margins.”
