With the general decline in ore grades in mining, mineral sampling and laboratory automation is of increasing importance to mines.

Sampling allows for improved understanding of the characteristics of the ore entering a process plant and the most suitable way of treating it. Technology that can sample high volumes, maintain rapid turnaround times and deliver quality results allows plant operators to respond to laboratory data in real time, leading to more effective plant optimisation.

FLSmidth specialises in laboratory systems integration, as well as driving automation in the laboratory environment and supplying  automated laboratories to the global mining industry.

The company’s offerings address all stages of mines’ sampling and analysis requirements. It designs solutions for exploration and ore characterisation, grade control, process plants and port shipment. It strives to source the highest quality equipment which is applied to laboratory solutions aimed at  achieving accurate sampling, effective sample preparation and detailed sample analysis.

FLSmidth asserts that each of its laboratory designs is uniquely suited to a customer’s particular operating conditions and strategic goals. The company explains that its design process is carried out in collaboration with the customer and includes a detailed examination of mined material and process demands, in order to ensure that the laboratory generates the type of analytical data required by plant operators. In addition, it asserts that its automated solutions offer consistency and traceability, while improving ergonomics and reducing hazards to laboratory personnel.

Among the company’s innovations is an environment-friendly methodology that replaces traditional wet chemistry. With no acid used to dissolve platinum ore, the process produces no toxic waste and thus reduces the impact on the environment.
