PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Nickel miner Mincor Resources has added a further 5 100 t of nickel metal to its ore reserve at the Kambalda operations, in Western Australia.

This meant that the company had replaced some 52% of the nickel ore mined during the 2013 financial year.

Mincor told shareholders on Tuesday that most of the additional ore was added from a drilling programme at the flagship Miitel nickel mine, with the total ore reserve for Kambalda now standing at 673 000 t, grading 3.2% nickel for 21 300 t of contained nickel in ore, while the mineral resource was some 3.5-million tonnes, grading 3.7% nickel, for 117 000 t of contained ore.

MD David Moore noted that the company was entering a phase of focused exploration activity at Kambalda, with aggressive underground and surface drilling programmes at both the Miitel and Mariners operations, as well as Mincor’s nearby gold targets.

“We did well during 2013 to replenish more than half of our nickel production in what was a fairly challenging period, with a constrained budget and limited drilling positions at Mariners,” said Moore.

He added that the updated mineral resource and ore reserve position presented a credible result and laid the foundation for an expanded drilling programme in the coming year, aimed at sketching out, at least in rough draft, another five years of production, beyond the current national two-year mine life.
