South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng provinces.

Project Owner/s
International manufacturer, distributor and retailer of energy storage solutions and automotive components Metair.

Project Description
Metair has secured multiple contracts to support Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa (FMCSA) ahead of new-vehicle launches aimed at the local and export markets.

The projects form part of a fresh investment and production expansion programme at FMCSA to meet the demands of the company’s growing export-driven business in South Africa.

Metair’s projects include a 35 000 m2 new manufacturing facility in Stanger, KwaZulu-Natal, and a logistics facility at FMCSA’s manufacturing plant in Silverton, Gauteng.

Potential Job Creation
The project is expected to create an estimated 3 300 jobs, with the biggest portion in northern KwaZulu-Natal.

Capital Expenditure
About R1.4-billion.

Planned Start/End Date
The investment was announced in June 2020.

Latest Developments
Metair subsidiary Hesto Harnesses launched the new Hesto manufacturing facility in KwaDukuza, in KwaZulu-Natal, in September 2022.

The new 35 000 m2 state-of-the-art facility is one of five capital investment projects that resulted in a commitment of more than R1.4-billion by Metair to support the expansion and localisation of the new Ford Ranger.

Other subsidiaries involved include Unitrade 745, Automould, Lumotech and Supreme Springs, with a variety of wires, plastic and chrome-plated parts, suspension parts, as well as headlights and taillights, being produced.

The new facility will produce wiring harnesses for the latest Ford Ranger and Isuzu models, which will be sold locally and abroad.

Production of the Ford Ranger started in November 2022 at Ford’s Silverton assembly plant. Metair subsidiaries entered production and ramp-up phases with peak production levels, which started from January 2023.
