Name of the Project
Medupi Power Station Integration Project.

Location
Limpopo and North West, in South Africa.

Client
Eskom.

Project Description
The Medupi Integration Project is one of the large-scale power delivery projects aimed at supporting the grid system between Limpopo and the North West.

Phase 2 of the project comprises the construction of two substations, Ngwedi, in the North West, and Borutho, in Limpopo, as well as the construction of transmission lines from the Medupi power station to both substations.
The substation will interlink with the rest of the grid, consisting of about 732 km of high-voltage transmission lines and an additional 2 000 MVA of transformation capacity.

Jobs to be Created
The project has already created more than 300 employment opportunities, with more than 100 people being employed from local communities.

Thirty locals were also trained in various trades, including pipe laying, shutter hands building carpentry, earthworks hands and builders.

The project has also sourced various goods and services from local businesses and is also involved in several corporate social investment initiatives in the area.

Value
R500-million.

Duration
The project is expected to be completed by February 2017.

Latest Developments
Eskom has energised and commissioned the second 500 MVA power transformer at the newly built Ngwedi substation, bringing the total transformer capacity to 1 000 MVA.

This will provide improved flexibility and reliability of the network in South Africa’s platinum belt in the greater Rustenburg area.

This commissioning of the second transformer also marks a significant step towards the completion of the Medupi power station integration project, which is aimed at supporting the grid system between Limpopo and North West.

Phase 2 of the power station integration project comprises the construction of two substations – Ngwedi, in the North West, and Borutho, in Limpopo, as well as the construction of transmission lines from the Medupi power station to both substations.

The first of the two transformers to be installed at Ngwedi substation was commissioned in December 2016.
