Masama mine, Botswana
Name of the Mine
Masama mine.
Location
The Masama mine is located on the western edge of the Mmamabula coalfield, southern Botswana.
Mine Owner/s
Minergy Coal, a Botswana registered company 100% owned by Minergy Limited, a Botswana registered and Botswana Stock Exchange-listed company.
Brief Description
Masama is Minergy’s cornerstone asset. The mine is considered to have exceptional coal qualities, specifically low ash and sulphur, accessible through economical stripping ratios. The mining operation has demonstrated that the quality of coal is suited for export to Europe, Africa, India and China.
Target markets include the sized industrial market in Southern Africa, as well as seaborne thermal coal exports, serviced through the east and west coasts of Africa.
Brief History
The Masama mine was opened in 2019. There had been no previous coal production from the mine area prior to this.
Primary Metals/Minerals
Coal.
Secondary Metals/Minerals
Not stated.
Geology/Mineralisation
The Masama coal seams are of uniform thickness, fully developed and devoid of geological disturbances.
The Mmamabula coalfield is contiguous with and forms the western extension of the Waterberg coalfield in South Africa. Geologically the Masama coal mine area is underlain by coal, coaly mudstone and sandstone of the Mmamabula Formation of the Ecca Group of the Karoo Supergroup.
Five major coal seams and a coal sequence are developed in the Masama mine area. These seams are named from the base upwards as, the E Seam, A Seam, A Sequence, A Upper Seam, K Seam and G Seam.
The deposit types found within the project area represent strata-bound coal seams of various thickness and quality. The strata in the Masama mine area are generally flat, dipping gently at 1° to 3° away from suboutcrop areas. A few faults, trending north-east to south-west and north-west to south-east, were identified by Shell and more recently by GM Geotech. The southern boundary of the coal-bearing Ecca Group with the Waterberg Group is interpreted as a faulted-contact.
Reserves
Masama had run-of-mine coal reserves of 68.7-million (as received) as at June 30, 2024, and saleable coal reserves estimated at 41.2-million tonnes (air dried basis) – only for the opencast mine.
Resources
As at June 30, 2024, Masama had mineable tonnes in situ totalling 374.23-million tonnes, of which of 76-million tonnes is opencast mineable and 255-million tonnes underground mineable, inclusive of the coal reserves.
Type of Mine
Opencast.
Mining Method
Contractor mining.
Major Infrastructure/Equipment
Masama possesses all the necessary infrastructure to ensure a sustainable mining operation, including access roads, an electrified power supply, a water supply, mine offices and workshops, waste dumps, weighbridges and a fully installed and operational coal handling and processing plant. This supports a production capacity of 125 000 t run-of-mine (RoM) coal and feed-to-plant a month. The current front end of the plant (RoM section) has a capacity of 250 000 t of RoM a month. The dense-media separation (DMS) section is modular and is situated on earth and civil works that allow for an add-on DMS module,
Prospects
Minergy successfully resumed operations at the Masama mine in February 2024, following a period of disruption and transition to a new mining contractor. The transition has resulted in a 25% reduction in mining costs, demonstrating operational efficiency and positioning Minergy as a low-cost coal producer.
