PERTH (miningweekly.com) – The A$140-million Easter Goldfields gas pipeline, being developed by gas infrastructure provider APA Group, was due for completion by December, and would boost existing mining operations in the region through potentially cheaper energy, Western Australian Mines and Petroleum Minister Bill Marmion said over the weekend.

“This is great news for Goldfields energy and employment – with up to 300 people working on the pipeline construction this year,” Marmion said.

The Eastern Goldfields gas pipeline will extend from the current Murrin Murrin/Yarraloola terminus to Sunrise Dam gold mine and on to Tropicana.

APA in July last year announced plans to construct the 292 km pipeline, and inked two long-term gas transportation agreements with gold miner AngloGold Ashanti to transport gas from the Yarraloola to the Sunrise Dam and Tropicana projects.

“Unlike the more volatile diesel market, gas gives mining companies energy price certainty,” the Minister said.

“The pipeline will also support and promote more development along the route, including the East Tropicana gold deposits, found recently with assistance from the Liberal national government’s successful exploration incentive scheme.”

The first gas delivery is planned for January 2016.
