PERTH (miningweekly.com) – ASX-listed Cape Lambert Resources has been granted its environmental licence for the Marampa iron-ore project, in Sierra Leone.

The miner told shareholders on Monday that the environmental licence was the first step in the permitting process, and paved the way for a final mining lease application, which would be lodged during the second quarter of this year.

Executive chairperson Tony Sage said the environmental and mining licences would significantly de-risk the project, and added value from a potential investor’s perspective by clearing the way for the development of the project.

“The granting of the environmental licence is another step toward progressing the Marampa project to eventually become Sierra Leone’s third iron-ore producer,” said Sage.

“Marampa has been demonstrated to be a financially robust project and gaining the necessary governmental approvals will significantly enhance the asset’s appeal to potential buyers, in turn, adding significant value for our shareholders.”

Sage noted that a number of interested parties were currently in the Marampa data room, reviewing the project details.

Cape Lambert has been actively seeking a buyer for an equity stake in the 680-million-ton Marampa project, which covers four deposits and two granted exploration licences.

The project has access rights to export some two-million tons a year of iron concentrate through the recently refurbished and operational Pepel rail and port infrastructure, as well as 16.5-million tons through the Port of Tagrin, when operational.

However, in December last year, it was announced that the Port of Tagrin was no longer being built, with the Pepel port being expanded instead. Cape Lambert and project developer African Minerals have been in discussions to finalise a revision to the infrastructure agreement.

It was expected that the infrastructure agreement would be executed in the coming weeks.
