Maqalika reservoir project

Name of the project and location
Maqalika reservoir project, Lesotho.

Project description
The Maqalika is a large dam, with long reservoirs and significant variation in pool levels, with an estimated capacity of 3,7-million cubic metres, at a full supply level of 1500 m above sea level.

The Maqalika reservoir is the key element in water supply to Maseru, as it is used as a raw water source when the Caledon river runs dry, or its water is turbid.

The objective of the project is to carry out site evaluation, waterborne excavation, hydrographic surveys, and hauling and disposal at Maqalika reservoir to restore it to original design capacity, and improve water quality by the removal of material that has settled on the reservoir floor, and to determine water quality and possible treatment of Maqalika water.

The plan is to remove silt, sediments and sludge from the bottom of the reservoir, through the dredge and pumped spoil area.

Dredging is to be carried out using one of the different, available hydraulic methods, that do not require shutdown or drainage of the reservoir, to avoid service disruption over long periods and water wastage.
